I watched a lot of MTV growing up in the 80's and 90's. A lot. So thank science for sites like Youtube and Vimeo, as MTV has made it clear they aren't interested in showing music videos. Certainly not upcoming artists videos. Follow to see my picks for the best of the year!
So I'm splitting the list in half. Here is the first string.
Eternal Summers - "You Kill"
Eternal Summers released four great videos this year. I went with this one because it's such a great depiction of something that is near universal to anyone who has been a teenager.
Belle & Sebastian - "Crash"
Music videos and animation are a time honored tradition. So of course Belle & Sebastian make the cut with this fun video.
Aimee Mann - "Labrador"
I could have easily went with her video for "Charmer", but Tom Scharpling hits another out of the park with this one (see Ted Leo's "Bottled in Cork"). This is a brilliant concept and I'm also glad Aimee Mann was game for it. Also a cameo by Jon Hamm and Ted Leo? Gold.

Justice - "New Lands"
Every video should be this awesome. I also want to see a whole movie of this.

M83 - "Midnight City", "Reunion", 'Wait"
This is a triple team. All three tell a story. A weird, ambiguous, gorgeous story.

Jack White - "Sixteen Saltines"
So I completely missed Jack White this year. I even left him off my year end wrap up. Until now. Check it.

Class Actress - "Need to Know"
This is a great 80's VHS direct to video horror aesthetic video. Very dark and menacing.

Thus ends Part 1.
